How to Choose Effective Face Serum? Oils, Hyaluronic Acid and... All Other Enhancers

Facial skin serum is condensed beauty captured in elegant bottle. It is the strongest-working skin enhancer and a real skin expert - you spot the effects after just one use. How to choose face serum? When is it time to reach for one? Are you aware that you can actually make your natural brilliantly-working facial serum?

What is serum?

Face skin serum is regarded to be an exceptional product as its use intensifies your daily skin care. It is one of the strongest skin conditioners and it has been designed so as to guarantee intensive skin care.

Its weightless formula and quite runny consistency let active ingredients easily reach the deepest skin layers where regular moisturizers will never get the chance to work. What's the result? Strong repair, nutrition boost, hydration, rejuvenation and intensified treatment of many, including serious, skin conditions.

What's behind the phenomenon of facial serum? The product contains highly-concentrated, ultra-effective active ingredients. A natural serum is mostly made up of plant extracts, natural oils, vitamins, essential oils and flower waters. It takes various forms and resembles a lightweight cream, oil, gel or emulsion.

When to reach for a face serum?

Until recently, there was a widespread belief that serum is dedicated exclusively to aging skin, affected by wrinkles and loss of elasticity. It's not true, though. We've luckily learnt that every skin type has individual needs and deserves upgraded care. Summing up, it doesn't matter if your skin is young, acne-prone, oily, dry and tired, dull, mature, lacking moisture or trouble-free - each type is going to welcome a quality face serum.

Give serum a try if you feel the condition of the skin is getting worse or you think it's far from the ideal. Lots of serums fight even really serious dermatologist conditions (inflammation, pigmentation spots), especially if they are based on safe, natural substances.

Remember!

Even though it works more intensively than a moisturizer, serum will never be its substitute. Serum strengthens skin and makes other cosmetics work better. Remember that and treat it as addition to your skin care, not as an alternative to a regular cream.

Natural facial serum

It's a cosmetic phenomenon. The ingredients in a natural facial serum are chosen with attention to detail; the composition is free from irritative, synthetic substances, parabens, silicones or petroleum derivatives. It is a product with no flaws, frequently formulated with natural vegetable oils as, after all, they are able to effectively repair skin and protect it from damage. A single vegetable oil equals a large dose of nutrients; a blend of a few is beauty symphony.

How do you know you hold a quality face serum in your hands?

A touch of luxury shouldn't be limited to a luxurious vial that serum is closed in. What's inside the bottle should be of the highest quality too. How to pick a good face serum?

1. Avoid controversial ingredients in serum - check for any comedogenic substances, paraffin, mineral oil, PEGs and silicones. Such substances as colorants, artificial fragrances, short-chain alcohols and strong preservatives don’t benefit your skin either.

2. Look for active ingredients - the ones having the key meaning for the serum's effect include vegetable oils, essential oils, flower waters, all kinds of plant extracts (flower and herbal extracts), algae as well as moisturising substances (aloe and hyaluronic acid). Vitamin C and E, retinol and coenzyme Q10 belong to other highly-valued ingredients in serum. However, remember that serum featuring strongly-concentrated vitamin C, acids or retinol may be photosensitizing so a sunblock is a must.

3. Match serum to suit your skin type - oily or acne skin will surely be fond of other oils and substances than dry or couperose skin. Always check the purpose of a given serum and if you make it yourself - carefully match natural oils and other conditioning ingredients.

4. Check how your skin reacts to serum - a quality face serum should be quickly absorbed, not leave a tacky coat, give a nice feeling of lightness, not stick to skin or overburden it.

How to use facial serum?

Face care serum upgrades skin care and strengthens skin, and thus penetrates deep layers yet it doesn't protect it on the outside. That is why always make sure that it's followed by a face cream. Serum needs occlusion which will keep it in deep skin layers - a moisturizer works this way, preventing the serum's ingredients from escaping.

Therefore, cleanse your skin and sweep a toner across it before applying serum. Wait until it's absorbed and next pat a suitable cream on skin. If you've got oil-based serum, you don't need to wait until it's absorbed - apply cream right after serum to emulsify oils and prevent the formation of the greasy coat on the skin surface.

Remember!

Strongly-concentrated active substances in a face serum might quickly evaporate from the skin, which means poorer effect. To avoid that, protect skin with an occlusive 'protective coat' in the form of a skin type-matching face cream.

Homemade cosmetics: how to make natural face serum?

You can create the easiest and most valuable serum by mixing a few natural oils (e.g. macadamia oil, jojoba oil and avocado oil. It is a strongly-nourishing nighttime essence, revitalizing dry, tired skin that faces up to toxins and urban pollution every single day. This oil-based serum can be further complemented by essential oils which have a strong conditioning effect. For instance, lavender oil enhances repair of collagen and elastin, has anti-inflammatory effect and evens out skin tone. Rose oil, on the other hand, soothes irritations, restores skin's elasticity, regenerates and has anti-aging power. Ylang-ylang oil controls the production of sebum, treats skin inflammation and acne. A few drops for 30 ml serum will do. Your natural homemade serum can really have amazing ingredients! Don't stick to two oils only. Get carried away and make use of a wide range of highest-quality actively-conditioning ingredients. Which substances can you choose from?

Do it yourself - homemade natural facial serum: recipes

Bi-phase rose face serum; all skin types

  • rosal water - 15 ml
  • hyaluronic acid 3% gel - 10 ml
  • jojoba oil - 5 ml
  • argan oil - 5 ml
  • sorbitol or d-panthenol - 5 ml
  • vitamin E - 1 ml

Mix all ingredients in a bowl and pour into a dark glass bottle. Before use, shake well to combine the phases. Use before bedtime and during day if your skin is dry. Perfect for all skin types. This oil-based face serum must be used within 6-8 weeks.

Repairing face serum for problematic skin

  • hyaluronic gel 1% 10 ml
  • rockrose water 7 ml
  • d-panthenol 5 ml
  • aloe gel 5 ml
  • niacynamid 1,5 ml
  • allantoin 0,5 ml
  • jojoba oil 5 ml

This serum helps you fight imperfections, ideal for oily, problematic face skin. Thanks to allantoin and panthenol, it alleviates irritations, calms down skin, keeps it moisturized. It brightens discolored skin and post-acne spots. Oil-based serum soothes inflammation, helps keep moisture and has anti wrinkle effect (natural oils make up a rich source of antioxidants).

Mix all ingredients and pour into a dark bottle. The serum can be used for up to approx. 8 weeks. Apply daily in the morning and (or) evening before favorite face cream.

Face and under-eye oil-based coenzyme Q10 serum

  • argan oil 5 ml
  • almond oil 5 ml
  • coenzyme Q10 - around 3 drops or 1 g powder
  • vitamin A - around 6 drops

Pour oils into a bowl, add coenzyme Q10 (if you use powder, warm up oils slightly so it's easier to melt the powder). Add vitamin A and pour the serum into a dark bottle. Store it for around 2 months. Ideal for nighttime skin routine. If used in the morning, remember about a sunscreen because of retinol (vitamin A) content.

Coenzyme Q10 is a strong antioxidant which improves skin's condition and reduces wrinkles. Vitamin A repairs, smoothes, firms up and enhances skin structure.

Argan oil is one of the best wrinkle-smoothing and skin-enhancing oils. The serum rich in argan oil is mostly designed for aging face and eye skin care.

It is a natural botox which makes face get back its radiance; skin is moisturized, there are fewer wrinkles and they’re more shallow.

How often to use face serum?

It surely depends on the preferences of your skin and its individual needs. Serum is often rich in highly-concentrated active substances so if your skin isn't bothered by wrinkles or acne, it's enough to use well-suited serum 2-3 times a week. However, if you feel your face needs intensive care, use it every day.

Bedtime is the best time for serum application. At night skin repairs intensively because this is when the key repairing processes occur, affecting all skin layers. Help your skin get back its condition and provide it with finest-quality nutrients like hyaluronic acid, vitamins, oils rich in phytosterols, flavonoids and beneficial fatty acids which ensure splendid revitalising therapy.

Morning is a good time for applying serum too. Choose the ones rich in antioxidants and natural oils protecting skin against toxins, UV radiation and urban pollution.
